ACER Assessment Services is helping the learning profession become highly skilled, knowledgeable and engaged in excellent practice.
Schools now have a lot of data, not least from the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, but with so much data there’s a critical question: how can schools best use it to improve learning?
It’s a question Robyn Hall has been asking principals and heads of curriculum in schools. Based on their answers, Robyn, a Senior Project Director in the Assessment Services Division of ACER, has developed the Schools Data Analysis and Reporting Service to help schools understand and use data in ways that benefit their students by identifying and addressing their learning needs.
Using assessments like ACER’s Progressive Achievement Tests, Robyn works with Xiaoxun Sun – a Research Fellow in ACER’s Psychometrics and Methodology division – and ACER’s Test Scoring Services team, using some clever templates to generate reports tailored to the particular needs of individual schools.

‘We can create longitudinal reports that show growth in learning over time for individual students and cohorts, and reports to identify strengths and weaknesses in terms of student achievement,’ Robyn explains. ‘And we can also create year-level reports so that schools can check whether this year’s Grade 7, for example, is on par with last year’s.’
The efficient template design, use of graphics and plain language, and workshops to support educators have one aim. ‘By making sure our reports are accessible and meaningful,’ she says, ‘we’re able to help schools make good use of the data so they can take specific measures to address identified needs. That’s all about improving learning.’
