ACER’s Indigenous Education Research Database can facilitate excellent practice in the learning profession by providing resources to learning communities committed to improving learning for all learners.
The Indigenous Education Research Database collects, indexes and makes available, free and online, research on Indigenous education. As ACER Indigenous Liaison Officer Gina Milgate explains, it’s a ‘learning ground’ where everyone can locate the most up-to-date research in Indigenous education. ‘More than a repository,’ Gina explains, ‘the database is an interactive online community where Indigenous scholars and others in the educational research community can connect and share research, and Indigenous knowledge and methodologies.
ACER’s Advisory Committee on Indigenous Education saw a real opportunity to provide support that’s aligned with the Australian Government’s Closing the Gap policy, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Action Plan 2010-2014 to embed Indigenous education in classrooms, Gina explains. ‘Because ACER is strongly committed to Indigenous education we stepped up to support it through the database. We’re extremely well placed to undertake this sort of thing because we understand the issues, we undertake so much of the research and we can bring all the available research together to inform policy and practice.’
Gina works closely with Cunningham Library Manager Lance Deveson and with Senior Librarian for Indexing Services Stuart Hughes to promote and source funding for the database. The plan is eventually to employ a trained librarian of Indigenous background to manage and maintain the database – once Gina and colleagues secure adequate funding to make that sustainable.
‘Our approach from the beginning has been to identify Indigenous educational research in Australia and New Zealand, and build the Indigenous research profile and contributions from there,’ Gina says. ‘This process has allowed us to identify the key players in Indigenous education research in Australia and New Zealand who can support our work at ACER. They’re also key advocates for the database in their Indigenous and education communities.’

The vision, she explains, is for the database to address research on Indigenous education from around the globe. ‘We want the database as a national and international presence to be the learning ground for Indigenous education research.’
