Week 26: Top marks - ACER helps AFL’s winners

ACER’s human resources assessments inform good decision making on the basis of valid and reliable evidence – even on the football field.

It’s absolutely critical that AFL clubs, like other organisations, collect quality information in order to make sound human resources (HR) decisions, according to ACER HR Consultant Gerard Ferrara. ‘Looking at a prospective player’s junior on-field statistics will tell you little about their ability to make the transition to full-time professional footballer,’ Gerard explains.

Gerard supports a number of AFL clubs in terms of their HR needs through specialised consultancy using HR assessment tools like the Work Personality Index (WPI) and the Emotional Quotient Inventory 2.0 (EQ-i2.0). ‘We’re using WPI and EQ-i2.0 to assess the potential of prospective players for leadership roles, which is not just about playing capability,’ he explains. ‘We’re also using the WPI to assess the alignment of on-field and off-field personnel to the key values of the club, and to help coaches and their support staff get a better understanding of the different ways that players learn and process information, manage pressure and so on.

Through years of testing, some clubs now have a lot of psychometric data, including data on premiership players and Brownlow medalists, to use in their search for the next premiership winning team.

‘Alongside the data we’re able to provide through self-report tests such as the EQ-i2.0, we’re also using the EQ360 to obtain more evidence-based information not only about how coaches and executive staff perceive themselves but also how they’re perceived and rated by others. The EQ360 enables clubs and other organisations to more fully understand management strengths and weaknesses, and compare results to other benchmarked effective leaders.

Making good HR decisions is all about using valid and reliable evidence, says Gerard, and that’s no different for an AFL club than, say, a mining company, government department or bank. ‘The challenge for AFL clubs, though, is that the competition for talent is fierce, not just between clubs but even from other football codes. Some clubs take a creative approach to sourcing talent from other sports and other countries, but doing that successfully depends on obtaining high-quality evidence and analysis.

‘A little evidence and analysis,’ says Gerard, ‘goes a long way, and on the last Saturday in September that means a lot.’
