The work of ACER Press links research and practice through the publication of books, curriculum and assessment resources, and research reports.
When researchers from a consortium of 10 universities came to ACER Press with a publishing proposal, they simply hoped to publish the report from their study on the Mathematical Thinking of Preschool Children in Rural and Regional Australia, but for ACER Press, the project is more than academic; it’s an opportunity to link research and practice.
ACER Press Development Editor – Assessment, Amanda Coleiro, explains, ‘ACER Press saw the value in publishing the report online, but alongside a book for early childhood educators and parents, Young Children Learning Mathematics, as well as supporting curriculum materials, and an assessment, which will link to PATMaths so there’s an integrated program of assessment.’
Publishing a package of resources in this way, Amanda explains, is a huge team effort, drawing on the expertise of ACER Press and ACER as a whole. ‘In the case of the assessment, for example, Andrew Stephanou, Senior Research Fellow in the Assessment and Reporting research program, is working closely with the authors Joanne Mulligan and Michael Mitchelmore on the analysis, scoring and reporting.
‘For the assessment resource, we will also produce a manual for educators that addresses the theory and research, and provides instructions on administering assessments and scoring, making sure the assessment can be used easily and efficiently.

‘By developing the package of the report online, the book, and curriculum and assessment materials like this we’re able to make the link between research and practice. It’s about adapting research to suit a wider readership.’
