NEW! Action Numeracy Classroom Resources for Upper Primary
Action Numeracy takes a broad and structured approach to teaching and learning numeracy in the upper primary classroom, incorporating direct instruction, strategy instruction and student-centred inquiry learning through action-based tasks. The action-based tasks provide students with the opportunity to develop further the numeracy skills and strategies learned.
Action Numeracy teaches numeracy content within a context that is meaningful. It provides teachers with the opportunity to interrelate numeracy teaching with other curriculum areas such as art, personal development, humanities, science, civics and technology in a manner that is very appealing and pedagogically sound.

Action Numeracy Stimulus Books
The Action Numeracy Stimulus Books are rich, interesting and fun!
Students should be encouraged to read the books for enjoyment and interest and not just as a ‘learning task’. Sets of the books can be kept on the classroom reading shelves or in the library with other books and resources.
Apart from reading for enjoyment, the Action Numeracy Stimulus Books can be used by teachers for many different kinds of activities, not just the teaching and learning units described in the Action Numeracy Teacher Guide.
Action Numeracy Teacher Guide
Suzanne Gunningham and
Christine Lenghaus
The comprehensive Teacher Guide provides a model for teaching numeracy. It includes:
- units of work based around each Action Numeracy Upper Primary stimulus book
- learning focus for each unit
- cross-curricular links
- activities that can be used to set the scene and unlock the students' prior knowledge
- lessons which form the basis of the direct skill and strategy instruction
- suggested assessment opportunities
- reproducible worksheets.
- has a clearly stated learning focus
- motivates the students
- revises skills already taught within the series
- sets out milestones
- suggests opportunities for assessment.
The Teacher Guide also directs teachers to appropriate exercises in the Action Numeracy Upper Primary Student Workbook that provide students with the opportunity to practise the skills and strategies learned in units. The Student Workbook exercises also provide an opportunity for the teacher to assess the students' mastery of skills and strategies.
Action Numeracy Student Workbook
The workbook contains activities for students to practise basic skills developed in the corresponding unit of work from the Teacher Guide.
These exercises are highlighted in the Teacher Guide with the icon for easy cross-reference. Each double page spread includes an explanation of an aspect of numeracy and exercises to develop specific skills. The Student Workbook can be used as an integrated part of the Action Numeracy materials or separately as a numeracy skills builder.
