Assessment of Language Competence Certificates (ALC)

Who can take part

Certificate 1 is for students in who have studied the target language for between 80 and 100 hours. It is aimed at students in upper primary and lower secondary school, and is a listening test only.

Students who have studied the target language for between 100 and 200 hours by August in the year of testing are eligible to take part in Certificate 2. These students are most likely to be in their second or third year of language study, usually in lower-middle secondary school.

For Certificate 3, students should have received between 200 and 300 hours of language instruction, and are likely to be in their third, fourth, or fifth year of language study, depending on the total number of hours achieved by August in the year of testing. Certificate 3 students are likely to be in middle to upper secondary school.
