Progressive Achievement Tests in Reading (PAT-R) - Revised
ACER Press, 2001
Range: 4th to 10th year of schooling
Administration: Group; Comprehension 55 min; Vocabulary 40 min
The revised PAT-R builds on the popular features of the original test format while introducing substantial improvements. These include updating the content and language of the test materials and reorganising the format to enable teachers to select more easily test forms to suit their own purposes.
PAT-R Comprehension
- Consists of four separate reading tests, ordered according to difficulty
- Each test contains eight or nine prose passages accompanied by multiple-choice comprehension questions
- Questions measure literal and inferential comprehension of prose material
- Passages feature a range of different texts types, culturally varied and with a balanced representation of positive male and female characters
- Test time 40 minutes plus administration time (55 minutes total)
PAT-R Vocabulary
- Consists of four word knowledge tests ordered according to difficulty
- Each test contains between 35 and 40 items
- Each item is a short sentence in which a focus word is used in context. Students select an appropriate synonym for this word from a set of alternatives in a multiple-choice format
- Sentences have been revised to reflect current language usage and to provide an equally positive representation of male and female characters
- Items test both comprehension and word knowledge
- Test time 25 minutes plus administration time (40 minutes total)
How might PAT-R results be used?
PAT-R results have several possible uses:
- As a snapshot of current reading achievement for individual students
- As part of a program of monitoring student improvement over time
- To provide information which may be used in setting realistic goals and planning effective programs of work
- To assist in describing student learning outcomes
