Survey seeks to measure student engagementA survey to measure university student engagement is being developed by ACER researchers, with the participation of many Australasian universities. Engagement data from the Australasian Survey of Student Engagement, which makes it debut this year, can be used to help institutions attract and retain students, manage resources, monitor academic standards and learning outcomes, and support students’ learning and development. Student engagement is defined as students’ involvement with activities and conditions likely to generate high quality learning, based on the assumption that learning is influenced by how an individual participates in educationally purposeful activities. The data gathered will provide the higher education sector a new means to measure and monitor the effectiveness of learning and teaching. The AUSSE measures student engagement through the administration of a state-of-the-art instrument called the Student Engagement Questionnaire (SEQ) to an institutionally representative student sample. The SEQ provides measurement of five scales: Active Learning, Academic Challenge, Student and Staff Interactions, Enriching Educational Experiences, and Supportive Learning Environment. The project is led by Dr Hamish Coates, with the support of project officers, psychometricians, software developers, a sampling technician and project support staff. The team brings together individuals with considerable expertise in the design and management of large-scale education surveys.
