My System of Career Influences (MSCI), by Mary McMahon, Wendy Patton and Mark Watson

MSCIThe My Systems of Career Influences (MSCI) reflection activity was developed in direct response to demands for qualitative assessment instruments because of their potential to elaborate meaning and to facilitate more holistic career decisions. Derived from the Systems Theory Framework of career development, developed by Wendy Patton and Mary McMahon, the MSCI provides an opportunity for young people to visually represent the constellation of influences relevant to their own career story at any given point in time.

My Systems of Career Influences is a qualitative tool which can be administered in individual counselling sessions or in a classroom setting. It is ideally suited as a resource for classroom-based career education programs. It consists of an 11-page booklet that is filled out by the young client(s) and the Facilitators' Guide.

The Guide contains decision case studies and suggested learning activities that are particularly useful for practitioners working in school contexts to introduce career concepts and terms. The booklet is designed so that it can be administered on two separate occasions. MSCI has applicability across cultures and can accommodate a wide array of career issues.
