Professor Veronica McKay is the Deputy Executive Dean of the College of Education at the University of South Africa (Unisa). She is an Apex scholar and has received numerous awards for teaching and learning materials developed under her leadership, including the prestigious Commonwealth of Learning award for the materials of the ABET Institute and the PANSALB award for the Kha Ri Guide materials which are available in 11 languages, in Braille and in South African sign language.
As an educationist and sociologist, Veronica’s research areas are broad and include interactive approaches to teaching, reading and second language teaching, social development, HIV/AIDS, gender issues, and ways of enhancing learning particularly through using the methods of distance education. In 1994, she established the ABET Institute at Unisa, which provided professional training for adult educators and implemented several large-scale development interventions for government; and has also undertaken a broad range of inter-disciplinary research for international bodies such as UNESCO, ADEA and ILO.

Professor Emeritus Merv Hyde is Academic Director of the International Projects Group (IPG) and a researcher in the School of Science, Education and Engineering in the Faculty of Science, Health, Education and Engineering at the University of the Sunshine Coast. An educator and psychologist, Merv has held a number of senior positions at Griffith University, including Chair of the Academic Board. His teaching areas include inclusive education, internationalisation of the curriculum and child development, learning and cognition; with research interests in inclusive education, impact evaluation of development education and developmental disability and deafness and hearing loss.
At the roundtable on Literacy and the most marginalised children, Merv presented on research from Indonesian Papua, which sough to investigate how teachers engage with local communities and how high school drop-out in years 1-3 impacts literacy.

Dr Paul Molyneux is a Lecturer in Langauge and Literacy Education at the University of Melbourne with responsibility for subjects in the Master of Teaching (Primary) and Master of Education courses. His research interests centre on issues of educational access and success for students from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds; and he is particularly interested in student identity formation, as issues of langauge, culture, and socio-economic status intersect with schooling. Paul currently leads a University of Melbourne team working on a Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development commissioned evaluation of an innovative Karen-English bilingual program in a high-growth corridor of the outer western suburbs of Melbourne, and at the roundtable presented on Bilingual Education and Inclusive Pedagogies for Immigrant and Refugee Children: Three Urban Case Studies.

Joanne Webber is the Inclusive Development Officer for CBM, the world’s largest international development organisation focused on disability. She has worked in a range of settings supporting mainstream inclusion of children with disabilities and is the final stages of her PhD in this area.

Katherine Fell is a program officer with the Early Child Care and Development/Education Team at PLAN Australia. Katherine has been working closely with remote indigenous communities in the Philippines to develop literacy approaches and materials that are culturally responsive to the realities and needs of tribal communities.
Katherine’s presentation examined the processes, experiences and thinking behind the development of innovative methods to improve and enrich indigenous literacy approaches with the seven tribal communities of Occidental Mindoro, and the attempt to bring communities to the centre of the learning experience.

Dr Adrian Beavis is the Research Director of the Policy Analysis and Program Evaluation research program at ACER. He has a particular interest in the theory of program evaluation and the relationship between evaluation and policy development; the display and communication of information; and the ethical issues between the interaction between intergenerational social mobility, individual mobility, interests and social justice. He has substantial experience in the design of quantitative instruments and analysis of data for the purposes of government policy development. Full bio
