LLEAP: Leading Learning in Education and Philanthropy 

An important research project, in its second year, Leading Learning in Education and Philanthropy (LLEAP), is helping to shed light on some important questions that have long plagued those looking to form partnerships between the education, philanthropic and non-profit sectors. Questions such as: what makes philanthropic support successful? How do we ensure it is relevant and effective? And who benefits? 

LLEAP is a three year research project exploring the impact of philanthropy in education in Australia. It aims to build knowledge and improve outcomes for schools, not-for-profit and philanthropic supporters. The project is an initiative of Tender Bridge, a research and development service of the Australian Council for Educational Research. 

The project findings from year one have highlighted: 

Commonalities in views on priority areas for investment in education among respondents from the philanthropy, education and non-profit sectors, but also some noticeable differences, 

That collaboration is viewed as a vehicle for learning, but limited time and knowledge present significant hurdles, 

Key areas where improvements could be made. 

Dr Deborah Seifert, CEO of Philanthropy Australia, says the research has important implications for philanthropy. 

“This is a groundbreaking piece of research. As a sector we have so much to gain by understanding the impact of philanthropy in education. This piece of research will enhance our knowledge and help grant makers and advisors make informed decisions about where to focus their energy and resources. Nothing like this has been undertaken in Australia before.” 

The findings from the project are informing a LLEAP Dialogue Series Guide – an evidence-based guide to growing ideas in education for maximum impact. Available in April 2012, the guide will support novice grant seekers and grant makers and feature case studies and other tools.
