Monitoring Skills Development

Introduction

The Monitoring Skills Development (MSD) program is intended to assess general reasoning skills appropriate to a typical curriculum at a secondary school.

It consists of two tests, one that may be used with students in their first or second year and the other in year 10.

Schools determine the timing of the test within the year and administer the test.

The MSD program is designed to

  • assess performance within a year level
  • investigate development of verbal and quantitative skills over time
  • predict performance in year 12

The MSD items are skill and not curriculum based. They emphasise reasoning relevant to humanities, arts and social sciences (HASS), mathematics and science (MS), and in general reasoning (GR).
