Foundation skills and lifelong learning – what does the evidence from international assessments tell us about improving work and life skills?

The purpose of ACER’s third annual Language, Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Conference was to address the issue of lifelong learning and how to improve work and life skills for youth and adults by investing in programs, policies and practices that target the core skills of literacy and numeracy. The conference gave participants the opportunity to network and share ideas. There was presentations and workshops from international and national researchers, from community providers, small enterprises, private RTOs, large TAFE Institutes, WELL programs, from both school based and non-school based youth programs.

In the spotlight was Australia’s foundation skills’ performance in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) and also the Programme for International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) and the implications for both policy and practice in schools and vocational, adult and workplace education, and also for lifelong learning and full participation as an individual, as a community member and as a worker.
