Identifying Key Measures to Improve RTO Performance: Assessment and selection
Presenters: Justin Brown, Senior Research Fellow, ACER and Ron Wilson, Director Diosma Consulting – Association of VET Professionals
Friday, 10 May 2013
Breakout Session 1, 11.30 – 12:30pm
The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), in association with Diosma Consultancy, recently conducted a research project with two regional Victorian TAFE Institutes. The research responded to an expressed need to enhance monitoring and evaluation processes, particularly in regard to how Institutes collect, analyse and act on data for continuous improvement.
The project, conducted by Justin Brown from ACER and Ron Wilson from Diosma Consultancy, provided the Institutes with a profile of their existing and proposed data collection needs, and mapped these against a common data collection framework. To populate the framework with information, a series of workshops were held with staff members to identify the key measures and information collected, analysed and acted on at each phase of student engagement, namely: market information; admission and selection; delivery; assessment; and exit/re-entry.
The research revealed the increasing importance that TAFE Institutes are placing on their assessment and selection processes, systems and tools to ensure the course of training is an appropriate match for the student. This session looks in detail at the key measures and indicators which TAFE Institutes are using to measure their performance. How useful are these measures? Why are they collected? How are they analysed? How are they utilised in the broader context of continuous improvement within the organisation? The session will also consider a number of measures which are not collected or not readily available but which may be integrated into future data collections.
