Breakout Session 3, 11.30 – 12:30pm

This paper discusses the initial experiences of workplaces that are using Return on Investment (ROI) instruments to document and analyse the costs and productivity benefits of LLN training.ACER has been commissioned by the Australian Industry Group to develop the instruments, which are being trialled by selected Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) workplaces during 2013.The study is being supported by DIISRTE and advised by a stakeholder reference group. It builds on recommendations from Ai Group’s National Workforce Literacy Project Final Report (2012). That study demonstrated the importance of employer engagement in providing LLN training, and concluded there would be value in developing instruments employers can use to evaluate investments in employees’ foundation skills. The trial of the instruments involves data collected at the three main stages: before LLN training commences; at the end of the training; and six months after the training. The paper describes the instruments, outlines the types of training and workplaces involved in the trial, and discusses the initial phase of data collection
