National Adult Language, Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Conference

Plenary Session

It’s not just the results that count: Messages from international adult literacy and numeracy surveys

Presenters: Dr Juliette Mendelovits, Research Director, ACER and Dave Tout, Manager, Corporate and Vocational Assessment Services, ACER

Friday, 10 May 2013

Plenary Session, 3.00 - 4.00pm

The Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) was administered in OECD and partner countries (including Australia) in 2011. PIAAC includes the assessment of literacy and numeracy and the results will allow comparison with the previous results of the Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (ALLS). Sitting behind these surveys are theoretical frameworks of literacy and numeracy - frameworks that offer insights for teachers about what literacy and numeracy in the 21st century incorporates including factors that make tasks difficult. This presentation will give an overview of the constructs behind the literacy and numeracy components of PIAAC, briefly describe the nature of the survey instrument and allow participants to gain an understanding of how such survey frameworks and instruments can inform teaching and assessment practices.
