ACER can support schools and systems in the development and implementation of audits based on the Tool.
During the audit, trained auditors provide a judgement or ‘rating’ of a school’s teaching and learning practices in relation to each of the nine domains of the National School Improvement Tool.
For each domain, a school’s practices are rated as ‘Low’, ‘Medium’, ‘High’ or ‘Outstanding’ based on the observations of the school auditor. Before reaching a rating, auditors usually meet with senior staff of the school to discuss school practices, inspect records and evidence provided by the school and make their own observations – including within classrooms if appropriate. Auditors undergo rigorous training to ensure that their ratings are made consistently across schools.
Auditors also provide schools with more detailed written reports of their observations. These reports, together with the ratings on the nine domains, can provide schools with a valuable starting point in their development of plans for improving teaching and learning.
