Principal for a Day

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Principal for a Day?
Principal for a Day® is a unique community partnership program which offers business and community leaders a first-hand experience of a normal day in a government school. 100 business and community leaders will visit primary, special or secondary government schools in metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria on 2 September 2008 as the school’s ‘Principal for a Day’.

Who participates in Principal for a Day?
The Business and Community leaders represent a diverse range of fields e.g. telecommunications, sport, unions, law, media, finance, the arts, construction, automotive, emergency/defence services, information technologies and come from diverse backgrounds e.g. age, gender, geographic location, profit/ not-for-profit organisations, government/non-government.

Where would I visit?
You will, of course, be consulted about your preferences, as part of the ‘matching’ with ‘your’ school. In the matching, a range of factors are considered, such as your particular interests or the school principal’s; individual areas of expertise; immediate priorities of a school; geographic location.

What information and assistance is provided?
You will receive a Match Pack of information, which will assist you with all aspects of the school visit. Assistance is available through the PFAD program co-ordinator at any time (contact details below)

What would I do?
Each visit is a unique experience, ideally designed jointly by you and the school principal, although the following structure has been successful for many PFADs. Most PFADs are in the school from the start of the school day until lunch-time.

9.00 Discussion with the Principal over coffee about the school
9.45 Tour of the school, its facilities and technology
Recess Meet the staff or do yard duty
11.00  Lead or observe a class in your specific area of interest or expertise
11.45  Meet with a staff, students or parents
12.30  Lunch and De-brief
1.00 Depart

It is hoped you will also attend our Leadership Forum. On-going collaboration between you and the principal after the school visit is encouraged but not expected.

What is the Leadership Forum?
All participating “Principals for a Day” and school principals, together with select guests in education and business are invited to our Leadership Forum on Tuesday 16 September from 11.00am -2pm: an invitation is included with the Match Pack.
