What’s the difference between the ACS and the ACS-2?
The ACS-2 has been revised based on 20 years of research. The differences between the ACS-2 and the first edition are:

ACS-2 ACS
  • 20 scales
(3 new scales introduced, Humour, Accept One’s Best Efforts and Act Up; 1 scale removed, Belong, after rigorous testing for reliability and relevance)
  • 60 items in the ACS-2 Long Form
(A shorter form, while retaining the relevancy, reliability and validity of the items)
  • ACS-2 Short Form coping styles grouped into Productive Coping and Non-productive Coping
(Allows users to quickly view the individual’s key coping style)
  • Measures adolescents’ usage of various coping behaviours and the effectiveness of these responses
(Allows users to identify behaviours that would help the individual)
  • 18 scales
  • 80 items in the ACS Long Form
  • ACS Short Form coping styles grouped into
Productive Coping, Reference to Others and
    Non-productive Coping
  • Measures adolescents’ usage of various coping
    behaviours

Further benefits:
• The scoring and interpreting have been simplified; profiles provide more useful and relevant information about individuals’ coping styles
• Manual contains conclusions from substantive research. This helps inform practitioners about how different factors, such as age, gender and ethnic differences might impact on individuals’ coping styles.

More about the ACS-2
The ACS-2 is an important research, clinical and educational instrument designed to support young people when examining their own coping behaviour. Updated to measure the usage and helpfulness of coping strategies in general and specific situations, it reliably assesses 20 distinct coping strategies.
Range
Adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age
Setting
Either one-on-one or in a group
Administration
Long Form: 15 minutes; Short Form: 5 minutes

The Best of Coping program is based on the research and experience gained from the Adolescent Coping Scale (ACS)
This program uses the same concepts as the ACS and can be used as a follow-up intervention program.
The Best of Coping program is designed to provide teachers, youth workers, social workers and counsellors with a structured, comprehensive program for helping adolescents develop resilience and coping skills to deal with common problems and situations.
The program contains modules covering a range of topics, including getting along with others, getting help, problem solving, decision making and goal setting. The program is sufficiently flexible to allow for customisation to the needs of students or clients.
The materials consist of a Facilitator’s Guide, which provides background information, guidelines for facilitating a session and suggested activities; and a Student Workbook, which provides scenarios and activities to be completed by each student.
