Purposeful Assessment: Using data to support learning 2013 workshops

ACER invites you to attend professional development on ACER’s Progressive Assessment Test in Reading (PAT-R) (full-day and half-day sessions) and Progressive Assessment Test in Mathematics (PATMaths) (full-day session only).

Session 1
Understanding Progressive Achievement Tests

Presenter: Prue Anderson, Senior Research Fellow, ACER
Full-day and half-day workshops, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide

This session will focus on the core data literacy principles and is suitable for teachers working with ACER’s Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT) in any content area. It covers:
• when to administer PATs and how to choose the right test
• what scale scores are and how to use them to inform teaching and learning
• what you need to know about norms, percentiles and stanines and error bands
• how to monitor progress over time.

Session 2
Teaching and learning strategies to support PAT-R for middle primary

Presenter: Prue Anderson, Senior Research Fellow, ACER
Full-day and half-day workshops, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide

This session will focus on using your PAT-R Comprehension data to inform your teaching and improve student learning. Teachers will learn how to use the data to identify reading skills students have already mastered, what they need to learn now and skills that are currently too challenging. Teaching activities and strategies will be provided that focus on the specific sub-skills that the data has identified students need to learn. This session will use teaching examples 0that are likely to suit average readers in middle primary. These teaching strategies will also suit above average readers in the early years and below average readers in upper primary. The teaching ideas will support teachers to identify a range of appropriate, achievable, specific skills that they need to teach in order to improve students’ comprehension skills.

Session 3
Teaching and learning strategies to support PATMaths

Presenter: Dr Hilary Hollingsworth, Senior Research Fellow, ACER
Full-day workshop only, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide

This workshop will focus on ways that PATMaths data can be used to identify specific areas of need in mathematics learning for individual students, groups and whole classes, and inform next steps in mathematics teaching and learning.

A range of strategies and activities designed to promote learning in areas associated with PATMaths items in each mathematics strand will be presented, including strategies and activities to address common misconceptions as well as to extend student thinking in specific areas of mathematics.

The workshop is suitable for teachers in all primary year levels in schools where PATMaths is being used.
