Test Structure

The PSP consists of three tests in the following formats:

Test One: Reading and Viewing

The Reading and Viewing test provides a single measure of achievement reflecting comprehension and interpretation of written and visual material from a range of curriculum areas. Candidates read several short passages and answer multiple-choice questions.

The Reading and Viewing allows candidates 30 minutes to complete this section.

Test Two: Mathematics

Candidates apply mathematical skills and knowledge to answer problems. They also do short calculations in each of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

The Mathematics test is in multiple-choice format. Candidates have 30 minutes to complete this section.

Test Three: Writing

Candidates have 40 minutes in which to organise their thoughts and complete the writing tasks. They write two short pieces in different genres in response to stimulus given.

Writing is a test of two aspects of candidates' writing:

1) the quality of the content and ideas

2) the structure of the expression

Writing is assessed on the quality of the work by experienced essay markers.
