The Australian Psychological Society 42nd Annual Conference
25 - 29 September, Brisbane

APSACER was delighted to participate in the Exhibition at the recent Australian Psychological Society Conference in Brisbane. The ACER Psychology team was impressed by the increased number of enquiries about psychological assessment, reflecting the need for accurate diagnosis and accountability in the Medicare system. Thank you to all those who visited the ACER stand and we look forward to assisting you with your assessment needs.

Apart from our continuing great range of assessments across all Psychology specialties, we were proud to launch three new ACER Press publications: Autism Detection in Early Childhood (ADEC), The Best of Coping, and PsychProfiler.

The Best of Coping was launched at the conference by Professor Lyn Littlefield, Executive Director of the APS.

Dr Langsford, co-author of PsychProfiler was at the ACER booth during much of the conference and assisted many psychologists with their inquiries. Free trial CDs for both the Child/Adolescent and Adult versions were given away at the confernece but you can download a free trial at: http://www.acer.edu.au/psychprofiler

Medicare and psychological assessment

MedicareThe Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative introduced new mental health Medicare items on November 1, 2006. These items enable people with diagnosed mental disorders to access services from a range of mental health services providers, including psychologists.

Under the new Medicare scheme, all registered psychologists who are endorsed by Medicare Australia can provide treatment for mental health problems. However, when the scheme was launched, (claimable) psychological assessments could only be provided by authorised clinical psychologists under Psychological Therapy Medicare items. From October 11, 2007, this policy was changed.

How to choose a personality assessment for your needs

Which assessment is best for your needs?

When would I use the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI)?

PAIThe PAI is a clinical tool in which 22 nonoverlapping scales provide a comprehensive assessment of adult psychopathology.  The PAI is only available to psychologists. Useful in predicting potential for violence, suicide, aggression and substance abuse.

For further information about PAI, visit ACER's online shop at: PAI

When would I use the Neo Personality Inventory – Revised (NEO PI-R)?

NEOThe NEO PI-R provides a comprehensive and detailed assessment of adult personality based on the Five-Factor model (FFM) of personality. In around 40 minutes, it provides a systematic assessment of emotional, interpersonal, experiential, attitudinal and motivational styles. The NEO PI-R is available to psychologists as well as those who have successfully completed relevant post-graduate studies in psychological assessment.

The Neo PI-R is useful for those wanting normal personality assessment.

For further information about NEO PI-R, visit ACER's online shop at: NEO PI-R

When would I use the Work Personality Index (WPI)?

WPIThe WPI is also based on the FFM of personality but focuses on work-related personality characteristics. Available to psychologists as well as HR practitioners who have successfully completed the one day accreditation training. Reports available include one targeted to Selection and include a Social Desirability scale to indicate the degree of trust the assessor may place in the accuracy of the self report.

The WPI is useful for organisational development purposes especially when online assessment is required

For further information about WPI, visit ACER's online shop at: WPI
