Detailed Assessment of Post Traumatic Stress™ (DAPS™)
John Briere, PhD
PAR 2001
Assists in the diagnosis of PTSD or ASD based on an individual's self-reported trauma exposure and posttraumatic symptoms, and evaluates associated features of posttraumatic stress.
Purpose: Assesses trauma exposure and symptoms of post traumatic stress
Candidates: 18 + years of age
Administration: 20-30 minutes — individual or group
The DAPS is a 104-item, detailed, and comprehensive clinical measure of trauma exposure and post traumatic stress in individuals who have a history of exposure to one or more potentially traumatic events. The instrument assesses peri and post traumatic symptoms (e.g., intrusion, avoidance, hyperarousal) and associated features (e.g., dissociative symptoms, substance abuse, suicidality) related to a specific traumatic event and generates a tentative diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) in considerably less time than is required for a structured diagnostic interview. The diagnosis can then be confirmed by a clinical interview.
The DAPS assesses both current and lifetime history of DSM-IV-TR trauma exposure, as well as the severity and clinical significance of an individual's post traumatic symptoms, including dissociative, cognitive, and emotional responses.
Unlike other diagnostic measures of PTSD, the DAPS was normed on a group of 406 trauma-exposed men and women in the general population. As a result, an individual's DAPS results can be compared (using T scores) to the scores of a large group of men and women with a known trauma history.
Detailed Assessment of Posttraumatic Stress - Interpretive Report (DAPS-IR)
The DAPS-IR CD ROM provides a comprehensive diagnostic and interpretive system that can be used to administer, score, and generate profiles and interpretive reports for the DAPS. This user-friendly software program allows the clinician to score all of the trauma and related scales of the DAPS and provides additional test information not available by hand-scoring.
