Identification and Assessment of Intellectual Disabilities, by Eirini Lammi, NSW Psychology Consultant

JournalA person with an intellectual disability will usually be identified either at some stage before entering or during the school system. For students with a mild intellectual disability, however, difficulties with adaptive behaviour may not have been previously documented. Adaptive behaviour is the "effectiveness or degree to which the individual meets the standards of personal independence and social responsibility..." (American Association on Mental Retardation [AAMR]). A psycho-educational assessment needs to be used to determine a student's level of functioning and should be based on a variety of measures of intellectual ability and adaptive behaviour, as well as information from the family and, where available, other service providers.

Instruments such as the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, the Scales of Independent Behavior, Revised and the Behavior Assessment System for Children, Second Edition should be used in the assessment of an individual's adaptive behaviour. The most frequently used tests in assessing intellectual ability are the most current revisions of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales, Fifth Edition and the Wechsler Intelligence Scales.

Issues in Cross-Cultural Psychological Assessment: Enhancing practice with migrants, refugees and indigenous peoples Conference

1 234567

Marian Power, ACER's Victorian Psychology Consultant, also attended the Issues in Cross-Cultural Psychological Assessment Conference in Melbourne on 16 May, convened by The Victorian Transcultural Psychiatry Unit (VTPU) and The Centre for International Mental Health (CIMH) University of Melbourne.

Dr Ken Rowe, the Research Director of the Learning Processes research program at ACER presented a keynote titled Trans-cultural perspectives on the design and use of psychological assessment instruments, and analyses of data derived from them: Developers, users and consumers beware.

The presentation highlighted 'key substantive and methodological issues endemic to the design and use of cognitive and psycho-behavioural rating inventories, and the analyses of data derived from them – especially in multi-cultural contexts. Moreover, the presentation provides evidence indicating that traditional psychometric methodologies employed to construct ‘scales’ (typically from dichotomous and/or ordinal item-response formats) and to report ‘norms’, that ignore the sampling, measurement, distributional and structural properties of the derived data, have long since passed their ‘use-by-date’' Read more from the Abstract from this presentation.

May 2008 is Autism Awareness Month

ADECACER proudly publishes the only screening tool for identifying autism and autistic tendencies in children as young as 12 months. The Autism Detection in Early Childhood (ADEC), by Dr Robyn Young, clearly identifies and details behaviours that can indicate autism in preverbal children. Those at risk can be screened and referred for a more formal diagnosis, enabling much-needed support at an early stage of development - an important contributor to successful intervention.

ACER also distributes Future Horizons publications, a specialist publisher of Autism Spectrum Disorders resources, as well as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview - Revised (ADI-R).
