Assessment and Reporting

ACER conducts research into the assessment and reporting of a wide range of educational outcomes (academic and social). This work, undertaken for clients nationally and internationally and in support of ACER's own tests and assessment programs, includes the refinement of test constructs; studies of test validity and reliability; assessment methods and formats; psychometric analyses of test data; and methods for item banking, online test delivery and reporting.

National and International Surveys

The large scale survey research ACER conducts draws on staff expertise in sampling, survey management, the analysis of survey data and the interpretation and reporting of results. Current work includes the management of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), work for the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the management of national sample surveys for the Taskforce on Performance Measurement and Reporting.

Policy Analysis and Program Evaluation

Research provides national and international leadership in a range of education policy analysis including economic and financial modelling, policy and program evaluation and advice. Staff work closely with educational bodies, governments and professional associations to develop, review and advise upon policies informed by research, practical knowledge and cost effectiveness.

Psychometrics and Methodology

ACER has established this new research program to provide high quality psychometric and data analytic support to projects; manage externally commissioned data analysis/methodology projects (including the national analysis of NAPLAN); and undertake, publish and present research on psychometric and other quantitative research issues.

Systemwide Testing

Research focuses on identifying more effective ways of monitoring achievement across entire education systems, providing more usable school-level reports and providing better feedback to teachers and parents. Projects are designed to provide educational decision makers with improved information about student learning. The activities include the development of test materials, psychometric analysis and reporting, consulting, training and research.

Teaching, Learning, Leadership

ACER undertakes research into the development of teachers as professionals and into the relationship between teacher learning and improved student learning in a variety of contexts, including schools, universities and early childhood settings. Current work relates to professional recruitment and retention, initial teacher education and induction, professional learning and leadership, working conditions, professional learning communities, teacher evaluation, career paths and pay systems. Research is undertaken into the learning needs of particular groups, including children in early childhood, Indigenous students and students with learning difficulties.

Transitions and Post-School Education and Training

Research explores influences on the educational and occupational pathways of young people as they progress from school into further study, employment and adult life, and on the higher education and vocational education and training sectors. Studies investigate the labour market and social outcomes of different pathways as well as evaluations of particular policies and programs. ACER undertakes a broad range of consultancies and research contracts for governments, policy organisations, and education and training providers in Australia and overseas.
