The Inter F and G tests are currently used for identifying gifted and talented students for accelerated programs and students who need additional or remedial assistance, particularly during the transition years from primary to secondary. The tests are also used to help schools in selecting students into classes.
In 2004, these tests are being replaced by improved instruments with updated content. Comprehensive normative data for ages and grades will be collected following the model originally used for Inter F and G, yielding norms for primary years 5 - 6 and secondary years 7-8, applying to students of or between 10 and 15 years old.
Tasks include:
1 Retaining the group administration model, but allowing for individual testing and reporting.
2 Revising/expanding the existing general construct (but continuing to test abilities and skills important to developing school learning and performance in work-related areas). Non-verbal reasoning has been included as an additional component of the package.
3 Producing two new parallel forms along the lines of Inter F and Inter G, called Form A and Form B; all questions to be multiple-choice, and verbal, quantitative and non-verbal reasoning items are presented in mixed order.
4 Writing totally new items on models from Inter F and Inter G (verbal and quantitative) and Jenkins Non-verbal Test (abstract reasoning), where appropriate.
5 Redesigning the format/appearance of the forms.
6 Producing one generic optical mark readable answer sheet for both forms.
7 Producing one test manual to cover both test forms.
8 Designing and testing a scoring service for schools based on the tests.
9 Collecting comprehensive, new, nation-wide norm data.
