The Rio Tinto Big Science Competition is conducted in three levels, Senior, Intermediate and Junior. The Senior level is taken by years 11 & 12, Intermediate by years 9 & 10 and Junior by years 7 and 8. Each level of assessment consists of 30 multiple choice questions investigating students’ knowledge of scientific method and scientific concepts and their application to various authentic and cutting edge scientific contexts. Student outcomes are graded and certification is given at High Distinction, Distinction, Credit and Participation levels. Those students performing above percentile 96 are given awards at a ceremony in Canberra organised by Australian Science Innovations and Rio Tinto. The competition attracts schools and students Australia wide and in New Zealand and South East Asia.
