ACER has been contracted by DEEWR to conduct an evaluation of diagnostic tools used currently in Australian schools. The evaluation is to focus on diagnostic tools administered in the years K10, with special attention to the early years of schooling, the transition years from primary school to secondary school, and Year 9. ‘Diagnostic’ tools are defined as ‘tools that are used for identifying gaps in students’ literacy and numeracy skills’. The long-term objective of this research project is to add to the larger body of research and development with the goal of lifting literacy and numeracy performance of all Australian school students.
