ACER is the International Coordinating Centre for the IEA International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) and is conducting the project in collaboration with the National Foundation for Educational Research in England and the Laboratorio di Pedagogia sperimentale Roma Tre University in Italy. This study investigates the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens in a range of countries in the 21st century. Reporting on student achievement in a test of conceptual understandings and competencies in civic and citizenship will be provided as well as information about student dispositions and attitudes relating to civic and citizenship education. The study builds on previous IEA studies of civic education, particularly the CIVED study in 1999. Thirty-eight educational systems are participating in ICCS. The target grade is the eighth year of schooling. The main survey was conducted in 2008 (southern hemisphere) and 2009 (northern hemisphere). The reporting is scheduled for 2010.
