Financial Stress in Australia - Analysis

Project Director: Dr Gary Marks

The Australian Bankers Association has contracted ACER to conduct the project Financial Stress in Australia: Incidence, Influences and Dynamics. The aim of this project is to examine the incidence and persistence of financial stress in Australia over the five year period between 2001 and 2005, its dynamics and its relationship with social, economic and behavioural factors.

It will show if financial stress is closely associated with particular social or economic groups (for example, low income earners, high debt households) and/or is characterised by particular financial behaviours. It would draw on a unique and extensive array of longitudinal quantitative data available for 2001-2005 from the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey to better understand financial stress.
