Dr Daniel Edwards

Daniel Edwards is a Senior Research Fellow in the Higher Education research program at the Australian Council for Educational Research. He was appointed in January 2008 to help develop ACER’s higher education research.

Dr Edwards’ research encompasses a range of educational issues, with particular emphasis on higher education. He has a keen interest in all aspects of education policy and has explored issues relating to demand for higher education places (both amongst students and employers), student achievement, student aspirations and pathways, selection policies for entrance to university, and educational ‘choice’ theories. He also has experience researching wider social issues regarding social stratification and demographic change.

Dr Edwards’ leads a range of projects providing advice and insight into policy and practice across the spectrum of higher education for governments, universities, stakeholder organisations and other bodies. Projects he has led include the National Research Student Survey (NRSS) project, the National Project Management of AHELO in Australia, development of the AHELO Contextual Dimension, research and advice to the Victorian Higher Education Expert Panel and analysis and modelling of upply and demand for researchers in Australia. Daniel lso edits and manages the ACER Joining the Dots policy resource for Australian Higher Education.

Dr Edwards’ PhD thesis, completed in 2007, explored the increasing competition in the school education market in Victoria and the influence of this competition on pathways to university. Prior to joining ACER, he held a Research Fellowship at Monash University.

Dr Edwards is also an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Centre for Population and Urban Research at Monash University.
