Dr Gary Marks is a Principal Research Fellow at the Australian Council for Educational Research in the Transitions and Post-School Education and Training research program.

He was trained as a Sociologist with a PhD from the University of Queensland and did his post-doctoral work at the Research School of the Social Sciences at the Australian National University and the University of California (Los Angeles).

Presently, he is working on two key Australian longitudinal studies, the Longitudinal Survey of Australian Youth (LSAY) and the Household, Income and Labour Market Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) study. Previously he was engaged in the international PISA study.

Dr Marks has written numerous research reports on major policy and research questions using LSAY data. These include reports focusing on educational outcomes such as early school leaving, attitudes toward school, school completion and tertiary entrance performance and reports that focus on initial labour market outcomes.

In addition he has authored reports on well-being and young people's transition to independence.  He has published in major Australian and international journals such as the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Sociology, the British Journal of Sociology, Quality and Quantity, Social Indicators and Social Forces.

His main interest is on cross-national differences and over-time changes in the relationship between social background and educational and occupational outcomes.

Gary Marks is experienced with a variety of complex statistical procedures including structural equation modelling, event-history analysis and multi-level analysis, and the analysis of data from cross-national and over-time surveys.
