About Gina C Milgate

Ms Gina Milgate, BCom (Mkt & Mgt), GradDipBusStud (Mkt & Mgt), GradCertHighEd UNE, is an Aboriginal woman from the Kamilaroi and Wiradjuri clans of New South Wales.
She was the Indigenous Liaison Officer at the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) from 2006 to 2020. Prior to her appointment at ACER she was an academic at the University of New England for six years.
Gina has a strong understanding of the issues surrounding Indigenous education and communities and the importance of consultation and respect for cultural sensitivities. Having resided in a regional town and metropolitan city, Gina has a considerable understanding of the diverse range of community dynamics and the cultural protocols pertaining to communicating and consulting with Indigenous communities and sensitivities within the personal, community and organisational contexts.
Gina has broad experience in the educational sector. She has participated in school-based research and has presented a number of programs about educational issues to individual schools and groups. She has led a major project that evaluated training in the delivery of health services to Indigenous people in central Australia. She is often invited to deliver keynote addresses, facilitate workshops and provide advice in the areas of Indigenous student outcomes and community capacity building. She has been involved in projects that have involved a high level of consultation with urban, regional, remote and very remote Indigenous communities. She has provided professional development to schools and communities in Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales focusing on social and emotional wellbeing issues for Indigenous children, family and communities. Gina also has experience in implementing planning strategies that are responsive to fulfilling the needs of Indigenous people and communities in a culturally appropriate manner.
Gina has established close working relationships with key Indigenous experts and peak bodies. She has been a member of the NSW Native Title Board of Directors and a member of the ACER Standing Committee on Indigenous Education. She has also been part of the National Schools First project team that involved facilitating workshops with schools and communities across the country, also providing cultural advice and cultural brokerage to the project team.
