Dr John Cresswell is a Principal Research Fellow at ACER in the National and International Surveys Program. He has recently returned to ACER after five years working at the OECD in Paris. After his initial degrees at the University of Western Australia, Dr Cresswell taught science and mathematics at schools in the Education Department of WA and also spent some time in the Curriculum Branch developing materials for a science course. Upon moving to Tasmania, in 1986, to continue his teaching career, Dr Cresswell completed his Master of Education at the University of Tasmania. Following an interest in the study of learning environments he undertook doctoral studies at Curtin University. Dr Cresswell has published articles about classroom and school environments in a number of journals including the Australian Journal of Teacher Education, the Learning Environments Research journal and International Studies in Educational Administration. He has also presented papers on to a number of international conferences including the American Educational Research Association annual meetings.

From 2000 until 2004 Dr Cresswell’s work at ACER was in the area of policy research with a focus on teaching and learning, and he was the National Project Manager of the OECD/Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) in Australia. He was responsible for writing national reports based on PISA and for implementing quality assurance procedures for the implementation of the surveys. Dr Cresswell was also contracted to publish a number of documents for government authorities and provided advice to education ministries in Australia and in New Zealand. At the same time, he represented ACER on the PISA Science Expert Group.

From 2004 until 2009 Dr Cresswell worked at the OECD Headquarters in Paris in the Directorate for Education. In this position he monitored the implementation of PISA in the 60 participating countries, provided advice to the countries and was involved in the production of many publications using the PISA database. He also made presentations and was involved in workshops in a number of countries, including Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the USA, the UK.
