About Dr Julie McMillan

Dr Julie McMillan is a Senior Research Fellow in the Tertiary Education research program at the Australian Council for Educational Research.
Dr McMillan’s expertise is in survey design and the statistical analysis of survey data. While at ACER, she has worked primarily on the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) project. As part of that project, she has published reports and journal articles on a broad range of subject areas relating to young people. These include literacy and numeracy, early school leaving, Year 12 completion, tertiary entrance performance, participation in higher education and vocational education and training, labour market outcomes, and youth wellbeing.
In addition, Dr McMillan has expertise in the conceptualisation and measurement of socioeconomic background, having worked on the development of a number of new measures of socioeconomic status and provided advice to government bodies on how to identify school and university students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Prior to joining ACER, Dr McMillan was a post-doctoral fellow in the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University. She completed a PhD in sociology at the University of Queensland in 1999.
