Ms Margaret McGregor is a Research Fellow in the Assessment and Reporting research program at the Australian Council for Educational Research.
She has contributed to several test development projects in reading and writing and the arts as part of one of ACER’s test development teams. She has been responsible for the training and monitoring of markers in several large-scale marking projects for primary, secondary and tertiary candidates. Ms McGregor has undertaken research projects aimed at identifying effective practice in literacy education, quality professional development and the links between teacher professional development and improved student outcomes. She has presented learning programs for teachers initiated through the Professional Development Unit of ACER.
She has recently been involved in providing assistance to Australian and International schools in the assessment of writing and conducting teacher learning workshops on assessing writing, planning for whole school improvement in writing and evaluating the effectiveness of school improvement programs.
Prior to joining ACER in 1998, Ms McGregor worked in a range of different settings in the Department of Education, Victoria and the Board of Studies, Victoria, developing expertise in literacy and English. She has worked as an English and Literacy consultant in the Department of Education. She was the project officer in the research project Good Literacy Teaching in the Early Years and in the DoE/ CEO collaboration for the professional development program, Writing in the Subject Areas. She was also the project officer responsible for the Curriculum and Standards Framework in English for the Board of Studies, Victoria (CSF 1, 1993-97), and for a time was acting Manager of the English Key Learning Area for the Board.
Ms McGregor was the project manager for the 1996 ACACA project, Mapping Curriculum in the Final Years of Secondary Schooling Across Australia. This involved establishing close contacts with curriculum experts in every state and territory with responsibility for Year 11/12 assessment. The study involved descriptions of eighteen subjects including English and Mathematics, at several levels, Science studies, History, Geography, Languages other than English and Arts studies.
She is author and co-author of curriculum booklets, published by the English Club, that provide advice to English teachers who are using film as text, and in assessment and reporting. Recently, she has been contracted to prepare curriculum materials in the English and Studies of Society and Environment Key Learning Areas for students in Years 3-4, 5-8 and 11-12, on behalf of the Australian Football League and Surf Life Saving Australia.
