Dr Sacha DeVelle

Sacha DeVelle has a PhD in Linguistics (language processing), a Masters in Applied Linguistics and an Honours degree in Spanish.

Dr DeVelle has an extensive teaching and research background in educational assessment and linguistics gained from working in Australia, the United Kingdom, Latin America and East Africa. Her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Spanish at the University of Queensland was the impetus for further postgraduate study into the psychology of language. It was there that she co-ordinated the Psycholinguistics Laboratory within the Linguistics Program and taught a range of Linguistics, Spanish and ESL subjects for a number of years.

In 2005 she moved to Uruguay, Latin America and worked as a language trainer and advisor to a range of companies that included Roche Pharmaceuticals and Sabre Holdings. She also worked for St Patrick’s bilingual school in Carrasco. Dr DeVelle is fluent in Spanish and has an in-depth understanding of the River Plate region based on 20 years of experience in the region.

In 2007 Dr DeVelle moved to the United Kingdom to work for the Research and Validation Unit, University of Cambridge ESOL. She was responsible for the IELTS research agenda and worked on language testing and assessment projects across the organisation. Her role also involved presenting on all aspects of the IELTS test within the UK and overseas, and publishing on test development. She was also the editor for Research Notes and a quality assurance officer for the department.

In 2010 Dr DeVelle founded her education consultancy in Cambridge and London. She worked with a range of companies that included British Council, Pearson Education, Edexcel, Trinity College London and Cambridge International Examinations. She has managed projects in Uruguay, Brazil, Uganda, Ethiopia and Rwanda, and has specific expertise in advising on education programs within developing contexts. Dr DeVelle has been a Trustee board member for The Humanitarian Centre (UK) and Cambridge to Africa (UK), and has received funding from UKAid to support projects run between Cambridge and Uganda.

In November 2012 Dr DeVelle started work as Manager and Principal Research Fellow for ACER’s Perth office in West Australia.
