Mr Tony McGruther

Tony McGruther served as a principal for twenty five years in a range of rural, provincial and urban locations. He was seconded to the Queensland Education Department’s Learning and Development Foundation as a staff college principal designing and facilitating localised learning programs for districts, clusters and schools. Tony has developed a close knowledge of school cultures and the issues forming the challenges of school leadership.

He was elected to the position of President of the Queensland Association of State School Principals and later the Australian Government Primary Principals Association. In these positions Tony developed an extensive knowledge of national and international effective practice in schools

In 2009 tony resigned his positions and joined the Australian Council for Educational Research as Director Leadership Projects across Australia. Tony has led a nationwide project in 2009 on the theme of the Evidence-Led Leader with a focus on using NAPLAN data lead learning improvement. He also worked with ACER on the Education Queensland Teaching and Learning Audit Tool.

Tony also operates his own consultancy called Looking Glass Learning. In that capacity he has been working as a member of the writing team for the drafting of the National Standards for Accomplished Principals and prepared the report of the Australian Primary Principals Association on the national standards for accomplished teachers. Tony also offers recruitment and leadership support to the Bound for Success leadership program in North Queensland.

Tony has maintained a close interest in the development of professional learning communities in schools. He is a graduate of the National Association of Elementary School Principals school mentoring training. He has recently developed and delivered programs for the Roma Branch of QASSP, the Tullawong Cluster, Mackay Region Leading and Mentoring program and the Western Cape College Leadership Lounge. Tony was a Reference Group member for the Developing Performance Framework initiative being implemented across Education Queensland.
