Mr Ray Peck

Mr Ray Peck is a Research Fellow in the Assessment and Reporting research program at the Australian Council for Educational Research.
His projects see him involved in most divisions within ACER and he is currently engaged in developing and evaluating student assessment tools in Numeracy at the National and International levels; designing and offering professional learning packages for teachers in Primary and Secondary schools in the area of developmental assessment and National Standards of Excellence; and defining what is meant by, and how we might best evaluate, effective teaching of numeracy, from the preschool to the secondary level.
Mr Peck has a particular interest in the effective teaching of numeracy and has been involved in National projects involving interview, observation and videoing of teachers at work. Using the 1999 TIMSS Video Study public release, in conjunction with AAMT, he has worked on a professional development package for teachers.
In 2002, he developed an innovative way of measuring teacher content and pedagogical knowledge in mathematics through the use of classroom scenarios for the Effective Mathematics Teaching and Learning project. Mr Peck has developed instruments to measure the growth of Mathematical Literacy (Grades 3, 5, 7 and 10) for the International Schools Assessment (2002 and 2003). He enjoys working closely with teachers of mathematics in schools and is currently consulting with the Mathematics Departments of secondary schools in Melbourne.
Mr Peck is currently President of the Mathematical Association of Victoria and a Councillor of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers. He is also a member of the Reference Group of the School Innovation in Teaching (Science, Technology and Mathematics) project conducted by the Victorian Department of Education and Training.
In 2001 he co-designed and delivered units of the Graduate Certificate of Middle School Mathematics for the Australian Catholic University. In 1999 he was awarded a Professional Development Award by the Mathematical Association of Victoria for his achievements in Mathematics Education and in 2000 was one of two Australian Mathematics educators to visit the United States to observe the certification process of Highly Accomplished teachers. He observed the scoring of Video Entries and on return to Australia developed a draft Video Portfolio Entry for AAMT.
From 1999 to 2001 he was a member of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers/Monash University Project team developing National Standards of Excellence for the Teaching of Mathematics and is currently a member of the Steering Committee for the Portfolio Research in Mathematics and English project conducted by Monash University.
Mr Peck has considerable experience teaching mathematics in Victorian Secondary schools. He joined ACER in 2002.
