ALSET is designed to assess a range of competencies commonly considered important for successful tertiary study. The purpose of ALSET is to appraise a candidate's ability to think critically about issues and understand the material given, rather than to assess knowledge of curriculum.
ALSET questions typically require candidates to understand and interpret a range of written and visual material. Stimulus material may be symbolic, verbal, spatial, graphical or tabular. Some questions may ask students to identify the main ideas in a passage, while others may focus on interpreting specific sections of a text. Some questions may ask students to make inferences and logical deductions, demonstrate critical thinking or problem solving skills. All the information required to answer questions is contained in the stimulus material.
The ALSET is two hours in duration and contains 70 multiple-choice questions.
Test Dates
ALSET is held in October each year.
