The test items included in ALSET are developed by teams of test writers at ACER. The items are rigorously scrutinised by panels of test writers to make sure that they are worthwhile and valid tests of candidates' skills and that they are clear and unambiguous. When the team of test writers is satisfied that the items are appropriate and precisely focused, the items are trialed with a comparable group of candidates to ensure that they function as expected.

ALSET is developed annually and each new test is statistically linked by shared items to tests from previous years. Equating of the ALSET forms enables the direct comparison of candidates' scores on differing forms of the test across years.

Reports are sent directly to participating institutions. ACER cannot release scores to individual candidates. Candidates will not be provided with any additional information regarding scores or the scoring process. All information remains the property of ACER and no right of inspection will be deemed to be invested in the candidate.
