1. Why has ACER asked for two addresses?
Candidates living, working or travelling overseas are often in temporary addresses. We need to be able to send the candidate preparation materials and notification about the test details to you wherever you happen to be overseas at the time, but we would prefer to send an important document like your results statement to an Australian address. Most people nominate their parents or other family member's address as their permanent address.
2. Results: why do I have to apply to enter my university course prior to sitting for ALSET?
Most tertiary admissions centres close their timely applications at the end of September, but run the ALSET sittings in Australia mainly in October and November. The ALSET overseas program follows this model. Your results are sent directly to the institution you nominate as soon as they are available, so will reach them in time for first round offers which will be long before you see the printout of your results statement which will be mailed to you about six weeks after you sit for the test. The institution needs to have received and processed your application so they can match up the results when they come from ACER. The institutions do not hold results if there is no application.
3. Test locations: there's a long list of test centres, but none in the city where I live. Can I arrange for another special test centre for me?
No. Most ALSET candidates will have to travel to the closest test centre.
4. Why is the registration fee so much more expensive than the cost of registering to sit for the test through a tertiary admissions centre in Australia ?
Economies of scale. You are getting a very personalised service by choosing to sit for the test overseas, with lots of international communication and the use of expensive couriers to send and return the tests.
5. Do I need to have my materials sent by courier?
Mostly, no. Your application is processed very shortly after it is received at ACER, and your materials are sent out by airmail, which for timely applications to most places is fine. However, you may consider using the option to pay to have your materials couriered to you if your application is late, or if the postal service in your part of the world is unreliable. Please note that the quoted generic fee listed on the application form is to major centres only. If you want a courier delivery to a non-major centre, please contact ACER ( stat@acer.edu.au ) to ask for a quote before progressing with your application.
6. Why is there a test centre fee as well as a registration fee?
The test centres are doing our candidates a favour by running very small sittings of the test, and costs of staff time and room hire have to be covered. Most of the test centres we use are established testing organisations which have a set scale of fees, but these vary from country to country. ACER tries to only use test centres which have reasonable fees.
7. Can I pay by bank transfer or EFTPOS?
No, cheque, money order in Australian dollars, or credit card only.
8. Do I have to nominate a proxy?
No, you don't have to, but it can be useful if you are likely to be difficult to contact.
