Critical Reasoning Test (CRT) Online

The Critical Reasoning Test (CRT Online) has been developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to measure students’ skills in decision making and argument analysis.

Decision making skills assessed by the CRT Online include the ability to:

  • make decisions about everyday situations and problems
  • use data to identify relationships, constraints, rules and consequences
  • make inferences
  • classify, generalise and hypothesise
  • identify and evaluate explanations, hypotheses, approaches and reasoning.

Argument analysis skills assessed by the CRT Online include the ability to:

  • comprehend and interpret arguments
  • recognise the way arguments and evidence relate to conclusions
  • evaluate the strength and weakness of arguments
  • develop and organise evidence and arguments to establish conclusions.

The skills assessed by the CRT Online are essential for success in tertiary studies. The test can be used to:

  • assist with admissions procedures
  • provide a diagnostic assessment to guide the course teaching program
  • view growth over the course of tertiary studies.
