The OPI tests for English and Mathematics are labelled by colours. Each colour represents a year level.

A key feature of the OPI is that it is able to take consideration of a student's ability by incorporating a bump up or bump down facility.

This means that the difficulty of an assessment provided to any individual student can be modified to suit their indicated ability. The first time a student logs in to OPI and commences either a Maths or English assessment they are asked to nominate a year level. This does not need to match the current year level of the student.

At the completion of an assessment, if a student has answered more than 95% of the questions correctly they are offered an additional assessment at the next level. If a student performs very poorly they are offered to complete an easier assessment.

If a student opts to complete the additional assessment, the student's individual report provides the results of the second assessment. It should also be noted that the student still receives an indication of their percentile rank within the nominated year level.

There is no charge to the school if a student completes the additional assessment that is offered as a result of this bump up/bump down facility.

If a school requires a group report then all students in the group must nominate the same level before they commence an assessment. The bump up, bump down facility is still available to these students at the completion of an assessment.
