How is the SYLF Assessed?

The flexible structure of the SYLF allows for a broad and integrated range of assessment methods.

At both the Standard and Advanced levels, students may encounter the following types of assessments:

reflective work journals, diaries or logbooks
oral presentations, research assignments, job application letters, videos, photographic records, power point presentations, radio broadcasts and websites
written reports on industry visits or work placements
mock interviews/simulation exercises
examinations and written tests

Assessments may be made by teachers, students or peers (verified by teachers/supervisors).

Students who want to be considered for university entrance also need to complete UniTEST.

Requirements for Completion of the SYLF

Standard Level

Students must complete a nominal 2000 hours of study across Industry Learning, Personal Development, Employability Skills, Literacy, Numeracy and ICT Literacy.

Advanced Level

Students must complete a nominal 2000 hours study across Industry Learning, Personal Development and their chosen academic subjects (including compulsory English).

Award of the SYLF

Students must pass all relevant assessment tasks to the required levels.

If successfull, students will be awarded the SYLF at either Standard or Advanced Level. The Award will show:

all the students qualifications and the standard they achieved in each subject/course
information about the students industry training

What if a student does not meet all the requirements?

Students who do not meet all the requirements of the SYLF Standard or Advanced are issued an Award showing each subject that has been completed and the standards achieved.

Information about the students industry training is also included if they participated in a placement.
