TSS Writing Test

To complement the published tests that are scored by TSS, schools can now order writing prompts that are then returned to TSS for marking. Schools must use one or more of the prompts developed by ACER.

Prompts

Prompts are generally suitable for years 3-10.

Creative Prompt

Photo of child (more suitable for years 3-6)
Quote on truth
Cartoon - pet animal (more suitable for years 3-6)

Argumentative Prompt

Alternate statements - computer use
Cartoon - dangers of the internet

Schools can choose one or two writing prompts from the list above.

Process

pdf of prompt emailed to school
pdf of answer booklets emailed to school
pdf of administrative guidelines emailed to school

School prints off task and answer booklet.

School administers and supervises the TSS Writing Test(s). Completed tests are returned to ACER for marking.

Marking

ACER marks student writing
Writing marked by independent and experienced professional markers
Students writing assessed by:
- Content (narrative - ability to develop a story line, character development, control of writing style; argumentative - ability to write a coherent argument, persuade audience)
- Language(e.g. structure, grammar, sentence construction)
- Spelling (this is only available for narrative tasks)

Reports

Schools are provided with:

raw score for content
raw score for language
raw score for spelling (narrative task only)
level for each of the above
descriptors for each level
histogram displaying distribution of levels
