TSS Writing Test

To complement the published tests that are scored by TSS, schools can now order writing prompts that are then returned to TSS for marking.  Schools must use one or more of the prompts developed by ACER.

Prompts

All prompts are suitable for years 3- 10

Creative Prompt

  • Photo of child
  • Quote on truth
  • Cartoon- pet animal

Argumentative Prompt

  • Alternate statements –computer use
  • Cartoon- dangers of the internet

Schools can choose one or two writing prompts from the list above.

Process

  • pdf of prompt emailed to school
  • pdf of answer booklets emailed to school
  • pdf of administrative guidelines emailed to school

School prints off task and answer booklet

School administers and supervises the TSS Writing Test(s). Completed tests are returned to ACER for marking.

Marking

  • ACER marks student writing using its marking guide
  • Writing marked by independent and experienced professional markers
  • Students writing assessed by:           
    • Content (e.g. ability to develop a story line, character development, control of writing style)
    • Language(e.g. spelling, grammar, sentence construction)
    • On-Balance Judgement (global impression mark that may acknowledge other features of students’ writing such as creativity, imaginative flair)

Reports

Schools are provided with: 

  • raw score  for content (score range 1-6)
  • language (score range 1-6)
  • on-balanced judgment (score range 1-6)
  • total (score range 3-18)

Local group percentiles and stanines are automatically provided if student group is greater than 100.

Cost

$11 per student (GST inclusive)

School can choose either one creative prompt or one argumentative prompt or one of each.
