Corporate Communications Officer

Megan initially joined ACER as a Customer Service Officer in 2008. With experience as a Copywriter for an online publication, in addition to an impressive array of qualifications in Education, Workplace Training and Communications, it wasn’t long before she was hunted by our Corporate Communications team in 2010 to better utilise her journalistic talents.

 

Megan is the recipient of the ACER Workplace Initiative Award for 2013.

Let’s get to know our crafty wordsmith a little better…

So Megan, what do you do in your role?

MR: I work on the development of the external profile, brand and image of ACER. This mainly involves writing about ACER’s work in an accessible way and finding opportunities to share that information with the community. For example, I might write a media release about new research findings for distribution to journalists, or I might write an article about a recent ACER conference for publication in our Research Developments news hub.

What do you love most about your role?

MR: As a strong believer in the importance of education and lifelong learning, I consider myself privileged to have the opportunity to exercise my passion for writing within an organisation whose purpose and philosophy align so closely with my own interests and beliefs. Working in the Communications team at ACER allows me to write about a field that is very important to me. I also get a kick out of seeing ACER’s work discussed in the media – hopefully as a result of my own good work!

What is the most challenging aspect of your role?

MR: Usually, when I am writing an article or media release, I only have somewhere between 400-600 words to get across the major and most interesting points of a considerably larger document. This is particularly challenging for me as, when writing, I am quite verbose – as colleagues whom I email will attest! It can also be a challenge to convince a researcher that my simplified language or phrasing is more appropriate in the context of the article than their technically accurate (yet confusing to the uninitiated) wording. 

How did you end up in your current field?

MR: In my senior years of high school I fancied myself as either a future journalist or teacher. I studied a Bachelor of Communications, majoring in Journalism, then a Graduate Diploma of Secondary Education in English and media studies teaching methods. After searching unsuccessfully for over a year for a break in journalism, I found employment in ACER’s customer service team where I worked for two and a half years until an opening came up in the Communications team, and the planets were aligned!

How would you describe ACER, its culture and its people?

MR: ACER understands the importance of work-life balance. The people are incredibly knowledgeable in their respective fields and overwhelmingly friendly. As a member of the Social Club committee we make sure there are opportunities every few weeks for all of the staff to come together and relax.

When you’re not busy enjoying life at ACER, what keeps you occupied? Any hobbies? 

MR: I’m a keen netballer, playing in social leagues a few nights each week. I enjoy seeing musicals, watching movies and supporting my rather unsuccessful AFL team. I also dabble in piano. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, I don’t play accurately but I play with wonderful expression!
